CEDAR RAPIDS - The NIACC softball split an ICCAC doubleheader with No. 10 Kirkwood Friday on the Kirkwood campus.
Kirkwood (16-10 overall, 1-1 in the league) won the first game 9-4 and the Trojans salvaged the twinbill split with a 5-3 win in the second game.
It is the second time this season the Trojans have knocked off a rated team. The Trojans shut out No. 14 (NJCAA Division I) Indian Hills 2-0 on Feb. 16.
In the second-game victory, freshman right-hander Macy Kellar picked up the win for the Trojans allowing three runs with four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings pitched.
Sophomore Brynn Stalberger recorded the last two outs to gain the save for the Trojans.
NIACC's Emily Jones was 2 for 4, including a double and home runs. The Trojans' Katy Olive hit a home run and drove in two runs and Madisyn Kelley was 2 for 2, including a double, with two RBIs.
In the first game, Olive was 3 for 4, including two doubles and a home run.
NIACC (12-12, 1-1) returns to action Saturday in an ICCAC twinbill against Hawkeye CC (4-14, 0-2) in Hudson. The first game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
