MASON CITY - The NIACC softball team split an ICCAC doubleheader with Kirkwood Sunday afternoon on the NIACC campus.
No. 12 Kirkwood (34-12 overall, 11-5 in the ICCAC) won the opener 6-0. No. 16 NIACC (25-17, 9-7) received home runs from Mya Bunkers and Ally Wall and won the second game 5-4.
It was the first victory for the Trojans over Kirkwood since a 5-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader in Cedar Rapids on March 29, 2024. it was the Trojans first win over a rated team since topping No. 19 Iowa Central 9-0 in first game of twinbill in Fort Dodge on March 28, 2025.
In the second game, Bunkers gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the first inning with her 19th home run of the season. The 19 home runs by Bunkers ranks third on the school's all-time single season home run list.
Wall hit a 3-run home run and 11th of the season in the fourth inning to put the Trojans in front 5-4.
Sophomore right-hander Macy Kellar (10-6), who allowed four runs through the first four innings, held the Eagles scoreless over the last four frames. Kellar scattered seven hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Katie Riesselman and Camryn Dilla both recorded two hits for the Trojans.
In the first game, Kirkwood broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning.
The game featured a two-hour lightning delay.
Sophomore right-hander Izzy Sloan (12-7) took the loss for the Trojans in the circle. Sloan struck out seven in the loss.
NIACC freshman Makayla Wirkus was 2 for 3, including two doubles. Bunkers, Ella Trenkamp and Dilla (double) all had hits for the Trojans.
NIACC returns to action Wednesday in a league twinbill at No. 7 DMACC. The first game in Boone is slated for 2 p.m.
