NIACC tops Ellsworth in 5-set thriller
MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team topped Ellsworth 3-2 Wednesday night in a thrilling ICCAC contest in the NIACC gym.
NiACC (8-11 overall, 2-1 in the ICCAC) topped the Panthers 17-25, 25-13, 25-22, 17-25, 15-12.
"We are so proud of the team for their efforts and attitude (Wednesday)," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said. "Being able to play like this at home and get a conference win is priceless.
"The team has been working hard and (Wednesday) the buy in was evident. Defensively, they took a stand to protect our team and that made a huge difference in the outcome."
Ellsworth (10-7, 1-2) had topped NIACC 3-0 on Aug. 30 in Sioux City.
NIACC was led by freshman Megan Tobin with 13 kills, three blocks and two digs. Freshman Hannah Brinkman had eight kills, five digs and 10 blocks.
Also for the Trojans, freshman Kinsey Anderson had 25 digs and four assists. Sophomore Emily Opstvedt had 20 assists, seven digs, two ace serves and two kills.
NIACC sophomore Alicia Machacek had seven kills, three digs and three blocks, Destiny Reasner had six digs and Ellie Hanna had 13 blocks, six digs and four kills.
The Trojans' Emma Miller had eight kills, 20 digs, three blocks and two assists. Freshman Kenedee Frayne had 15 assists, four digs and one ace serve and sophomore Kit Byars had six kills, five blocks and one dig.
NIACC returns to action Friday in a non-conference match at the Luther College junior varsity in Decorah. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
