
NIACC tops Iowa Lakes, 3-1
MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team topped Iowa Lakes 3-1 Thursday in an ICCAC contest in the NIACC gym.
Thursday's match was NIACC's Unite and Fight match where the Trojans raised money to fight cancer with all proceeds going to Mason City's MercyOne Cancer Center.
"(Thursday) it was an honor to play for our Unite and Fight cancer awareness event," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said, "and give back to our community.
"We want to thank everyone who came out to support the event, as well as all the sponsors."
In Thursday's match, NIACC's Alyssa Wickersheim recorded three ace serves to push her career total to 102. She became the sixth player in school history with 100 career ace serves.
NIACC sophomore Jaida Hansen had 13 kills, four digs and three blocks. Wickersheim had seven kills, 15 digs and three blocks to go with her three ace serves.
NIACC's Kennedy Schwiesow had 25 digs, two assists and one ace serve, Iwalani Beltran had 21 assists, one dig and one ace serve and Ellie Hanna had five kills and six blocks.
The Trojans' Abbie Hyde had 10 digs, two assists and one ace serve, Alicia Machacek had seven kills, three blocks and two digs, Kelly Miller had six kills, two digs and two blocks, Emily Opstvedt had 13 assissts and 10 digs and Kit Byars had five blocks and two digs.
"The outcome of the match is obviously one that make the night even better," Brandt said. "We want to play with more consistent confidence and we will continue to work on that one ball at a time."
NIACC (11-19 overall, 2-7 in the ICCAC) returns to action Saturday at home against Marshalltown CC.
