
NIACC falls to No. 8 Iowa Central
MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 8 Iowa Central Tuesday in the first event in the newly remodeled NIACC gym.
Iowa Central (17-2 overall, 3-1) won 25-20, 25-14, 25-19.
"The first official home match in the renovated gym was filled with lots of excitement," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said. "What a great crowd.
"it also seemed like we were a little nervous about the opportunity."
Sophomore Jaida Hansen led NIACC with nine kills, two blocks and one dig. Sophomore Iwalani Beltran had 13 assists, five digs and three ace serves.
NIACC's Kennedy Schwiesow had 21 digs, two ace serves and one kill. Addison Tabbert had eight digs, two kills and one assist and Emily Opstvedt had five assists, four digs, two kills and one ace serve.
Also for the Trojans, Abbie Hyde had six digs, one ace serve and one assist, Alicia Machacek had two digs, two assists, one kill and one block, Ellie Hanna had four kills and three digs, Kit Byars had three kills and three blocks and Zhane Singer had two kills and two blocks.
"Our defense gave us lots of opportunities," Brandt said, "and we need to continue to trust ourselves offensively.
"We have another day of practice before our next conference match Thursday at No. 15 Hawkeye CC."
NIACC (8-13, 0-4) returns to action Thursday in an ICCAC match at No. 15 Hawkeye CC. Match time in Waterloo is set for 6 p.m.
