NIACC drops pair at own tournament

MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the NIACC tournament.
Central Lakes College topped the Trojans 3-2 winning by the scores of 20-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-14, 15-8.
In its second match of the day, the Trojans fell to Ellsworth 3-1. The Panthers won 25-10, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22.
"We started much better (Saturday)," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said, "and although we didn't finish the way we needed, we are seeing good growth as a team.
"We are learning how to play together and want to keep improving as a team is a priority."
NIACC's Jaida Hansen had 18 kills, seven blocks and five digs. The Trojans' Alyssa Wickersheim collected 17 kills, 41 digs, three ace serves and three blocks.
NIACC's Kit Byars had seven kills, seven blocks, six digs and one ace serve. Byars now has 108 blocks in her freshman season, including 15 at the two-day NIACC tournament.
NIACC's Abbie Hyde had 31 digs, Kennedy Schwiesow had 38 digs, seven assists and one ace serve, Alicia Machacek had 11 kills, three blocks and two digs and Kelly Miller had 13 kills and six digs.
The Trojans' Ellie Hanna had seven kills, seven blocks and four digs, Emily Opstvedt had 21 assists, 13 digs and two ace serves and Iwalani Beltran had 42 assists, 14 digs and two ace serves.
NIACC (10-18 overall) returns to action Tuesday in an ICCAC contest at Kirkwood. Match time is slated for 6:30 p.m.
