Trojans in fourth at Iowa Central Invite
FORT DODGE - The NIACC women's golf team is in fourth place with a 349 Friday after the first day of the Iowa Central Spring Invitational at the Fort Dodge Country Club.
Briar Cliff is the first day leader with a round of 315. Host Iowa Central is in second with a 323 and Simpson College is in third place with a 329.
Freshman Meghan DeLong led the Trojans with a round of 80 and sits in fifth place heading into the final 18 holes Saturday of the 36-hole tournament. Briar Cliff's Helene Getz Bergmo is the first day leader with a 75.
"Meghan was very disappointed with her finish, but she played great the entire day, except for two swings that clipped a tree and went out of bounds," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "She'll be focused to try and catch the leader (Saturday)."
Also for the Trojans Friday, freshman Ashyln Berven shot a spring season-best 85.
"It was a great effort by Ashyln Berven (Friday)," Frenz said. "She got an early birdie in the round and that propelled her to a very solid round.
"She had her driver working really well (Friday) and when she's hitting that good and putting herself in good position off the tee, she's pretty good.
NIACC freshman Addy Boell shot an 89, freshman Danielle Randick shot a spring season-best 95 and Kenedee Frayne shot a 100.
The Trojans' Kaiya Holten shot a 110 playing as an individual.
"Addy Boell also put together a good round," Frenz said. "Her short game kind of got in her way late in the round, but she played really well throughout the day."
The second round of the 36-hole tournament starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
