Trojans' DeLong wins Hawkeye CC Redtail Spring Shootout
WATERLOO - NIACC freshman Meghan DeLong won the Hawkeye CC Redtail Spring Shootout Thursday with a 78 at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course.
It was DeLong's seventh individual title in her first season as a Trojan. DeLong won six individual titles in NIACC's fall season.
"It was a great win by Meghan (Thursday) after getting off to a bit of a rocky start," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "She did an outstanding job of controlling her emotions, staying in the moment and did a great job of putting together a solid round to win by a stroke."
The 78 by DeLong was her ninth career round in the 70s. It was also the 16th individual title for the NIACC wmen's golf program in the Frenz era, which started in 2006.
"Her short game from about 130 yards was a little off (Thursday), but she scrambled beautifully and putted much better than last week," Frenz said.
William Penn's Sarah Gutuza placed second with a round of 79.
NIACC shot a 350 as a team and placed second. DMACC was the team champion with a 343. Viterbo University was third with a 359 and Iowa Lakes was fourth with a 372.
Also for the Trojans, Addy Boell shot 86 and placed fifth in the individual medalist competition, Ashlyn Berven shot 91, Kenedee Frayne shot 95 and Kaiya Holten shot 101. Also, Danielle Randick shot 102.
"Our team was right there, too," Frenz said. "Abby Boell hit the ball very well (Thursday) and included a couple birdies on her day to keep a good round intact.
"Ashlyn Berven had a very good back nine holes shooting a 48-43, meaning she's got what it takes and just needs to put it altogether. I love Kenedee Frayne's fight, as well. She didn't have her best stuff but battled through some early issues and will continue to get better each time she hits the course."
NIACC returns to action April 10-11 at the Iowa Central Invitational in Fort Dodge.
"We're disappointed that we didn't get the win (Thursday)," Frenz said, "but we know it's early and we'll just build on this effort."
