NIACC's DeLong sits in 2nd at BVU Fall Invite
STORM LAKE - NIACC freshman Meghan DeLong is in a tie for second place with a first-day 78 Saturday at the Buena Vista University Fall Invitational.
DeLong, who won the NIACC Fall Invitational on Tuesday, trails Waldorf University's Amanda Karvala, who shot a 75 on Saturday, heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.
"Meghan DeLong was really good on the back nine (Saturday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "and put herself in good position to win this tournament with a good round (Sunday).
"She didn't hit the ball poorly on the front but did hit one out of bounds, but to come back on this back nine to shoot 37 is fantastic."
NIACC, which sits in 10th place with a first-day 359, also received a 90 from freshman Addy Boell. Central College is the first-day leader with a 325.
"I'm happy for Addy Boell (Saturday)," Frenz said. "Her 44 on the front proves that she can play on the courses that we're seeing at the college level and a shot here or there and she gets into the 80s."
Also for the Trojans Saturday, sophomore Paige Danger shot 93, freshman Danielle Randick shot 98 and freshman Ashlyn Berven shot 103.
"Ashlyn just couldn't get it going (Saturday)," Frenz said, "but I'm confident she'll bounce back (Saturday).
"Paige Danger needs her putter to get going because outside of that, she's striking the ball pretty well. I was also encouraged how Danielle Randick hung in there from a tough start. Our goal is to improve every time we step on the course."
Team standings - Central College 325, Saint Mary (Neb.) 330, Waldorf University 333, Coe College 339, Buena Vista University 346, Loras College 347, Augsburg 348, Central College B 348, Simpson College 357, NIACC 359, Nebraska Wesleyan 373.
