Trojans win Hawkeye CC Redtail Fall Classic

DIKE - The NIACC women's golf team won the Hawkeye CC Redtail Classic Friday with a score of 323 at the Fox Ridge Golf Course.

It was the first team title for the NIACC's women golf team since the Trojans won the Battle of Waterloo on April 15, 2023.

DMACC was second with a 330 and Waldorf was third with a 332.

The 323 by the Trojans Friday was a season low. The previous best round this fall by the Trojans was a 336 at the NIACC Fall Invitational on Sept. 12 at Highland Park Golf Course.

"It was a great win for the team (Friday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "Waldorf and DMACC are both quality programs and we've been battling them at almost every tournament this year.

"We finally put together a total team effort and pulled out a nice win."

NIACC was led by individual medalist Meghan DeLong with a career-best round of 71, which is the lowest round in the Chris Frenz era, which began in 2006. DMACC's Viola Welsh was the runner-up medalist with a 77.

It is the fifth individual title this fall for DeLong, who has won three times in the last six days. She also claimed titles recently at the Waldorf University Fall Invitational and the Waldorf University Challenge.

"Meghan DeLong has just been phenomenal this fall - no other way to put it," Frenz said. "She just has it dialed in the past two weeks and to shoot one-under par is tremendous."

Also for the Trojans Friday, freshman Ashlyn Berven shot a career-best 80, sophomore Paige Danger shot a career-best 85, freshman Addy Boell matched her career-best round with an 87 and Danielle Randick shot 96.

"I've been waiting for Ashyln Berven to start hitting on all cylinders and (Friday) was the day - a very solid 80," Frenz said. "Plus, Paige Danger and Addy Boell had their college best scores (Friday).

"This is a big confidence boost for this team and we head into the off-season with one tournament left."

The Trojans' Kaiya Holten shot a round of 109.

NIACC wraps up its fall season Oct. 14-15 at the Grand View University Fall Invitational at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.
