NIACC tops Southeastern on sophomore night
MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team stopped Southeastern 3-1 on sophomore night Tuesday in the NIACC gym.
NIACC (9-9 overall, 9-9 in the ICCAC) won 25-12, 25-13, 21-25, 25-23.
"The last regular season match is so bitter sweet," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said, "but what a wonderful way to play as a team and with our own fans in the stands.
"If this season has taught us anything, we should appreciate all the little things including the opportunity to compete as well as the opportunity for our loved ones to see us play in the gym."
Before Wednesday's match, NIACC sophomores Katelin Adams, Hannah Hanson, Megan Hollander, Bri Powers and Becca Steffen were honored.
NIACC was led by freshman Grace Tobin with 14 kills, 13 digs, three assists, three ace serves and three blocks. Steffen had 28 assists, 12 digs, six kills and three ace serves.
Powers had had eight digs, two assists and two ace serves, Samantha Coron had 12 digs, Ilyanna Fillspipe had three ace serves and three digs, Hollander had five kills and two blocks and Adams had three kills and three digs.
Also for the Lady Trojans, Halsie Keltner had 11 kills and three digs and Hanson had five kills.
"We are so proud of the team for working hard to control our unforced errors (Tuesday)," Brandt said, "as well as good energy and good communication."
NIACC returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday in the opening round of the NJCAA Region XI-A tournament against Hawkeye CC in Waterloo. The match is slated to start at 1 p.m.
