
No. 18 Hawkeye CC tops No. 15 NIACC, 3-2
WATERLOO - The No. 15 NIACC volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 18 Hawkeye CC in an ICCAC match Tuesday night.
Hawkeye CC (2-0 overall, 2-0 in ICCAC) won 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 16-25, 17-15.
It is the third straight match between NIACC and Hawkeye CC that went five games. NIACC nipped Hawkeye CC 3-2 in the 2019 season and edged the Redtails 3-2 in the 2018 regional tournament.
In the deciding fifth game, the score was tied at 10-10, 11-11, 14-14 and 15-15 before Hawkeye CC claimed the conference match 17-15.
NIACC sophomore Becca Steffen recorded 47 assists to push her career total to 1,011 as she became the 12th player in school history with 1,000 career assists. Steffen now ranks 11th on the school's career assist list with 1,009.
Steffen also added seven kills, 12 digs, two ace serves and two blocks.
NIACC was led by freshman Grace Tobin with 27 kills, 18 digs, two ace serves and two blocks. The 27 kills was the most in a match by a NIACC player since Kennedy Meister recorded 29 kills against DMACC on Sept. 4, 2019.
NIACC's Halsie Keltner had 12 kills, 14 digs and four assists.
Also for NIACC, Bri Powers had 16 digs and four assists, Samantha Coron had seven digs, four assists, two kills and two ace serves and Megan Hollander had four kills and one block.
NIACC's Megan Vidmar had six digs and two kills and Hannah Hanson had four kills, two digs and two blocks.
NIACC (1-1, 1-1) returns to action Thursday at home against No. 17 Northeast CC (1-0, 1-0). Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
Northeast CC opened its season with a 3-0 win over Iowa Lakes on Tuesday.
