NIACC falls to Iowa Western, 3-0
COUNCIL BLUFFS - The battle of rated teams went to Iowa Western.
No. 11 (NJCAA Division I) Iowa Western topped No. 16 (NJCAA Division II) NIACC 3-0 in ICCAC volleyball action Sunday afternoon. Iowa Western won 25-19, 25-12, 25-10.
"We started strong and somehow turned a switch to stop believing in ourselves," said NIACC coach Chris Brandt, whose team was playing for the first time in 10 days, "and didn't continue to work together. Ultimately, we are just happy to have the opportunity to compete."
NIACC's match last Sunday against Marshalltown CC was canceled due to the Tigers not being able to field a roster. NIACC's match last Thursday against Kirkwood was canceled due to inclement weather.
NIACC (2-2 overall, 2-2 in ICCAC) was led by freshman Grace Tobin with eight kills, five digs and two blocks. Sophomore Becca Steffen collected 15 assists with nine digs and four kills.
Also for NIACC, Bri Powers had nine digs and two assists, Samantha Coron had six digs and three assists, Megan Hollander had four kills and one block and Megan Vidmar had two kills and two digs.
NIACC's Emily Jacobon had two blocks and one kill, Hannah Hanson had two kills and Emily Wittnebel had two digs.
"We saw some very good things such as players moving positions due to illness, as well, as bench players coming in and doing their job for the team," Brandt said. "Coming in the play in a moments notice is the difficult position and they did a great job of doing whatever the team needed."
NIACC returns to action with a pair of home matches this week. The Lady Trojans host DMACC on Tuesday and Iowa Lakes on Thursday.
Both matches start at 7 p.m. in the NIACC gym.
