No. 15 NIACC stops Southwestern, 3-0
MASON CITY - The No. 15 NIACC volleyball team topped Southwestern 3-0 in an ICCAC match Sunday afternoon in the NIACC gym.
NIACC won the season-opening match 25-14, 25-15, 25-21.
"Big picture, we are just so happy to have the opportunity to compete," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said. "As a whole, the team did a nice job of staying in the present moment working on our 'one ball at a time' mentality.
"There will always be things to work on, but we did a nice job of focusing on what our team needs to be successful."
NIACC, which won its season opener for the third straight season, was led by freshman Halsie Keltner with 12 kills and freshman Grace Tobin with 11 kills. Keltner added four digs and one block and Tobin collected 10 digs.
Sophomore setter Becca Steffen had 28 assists, 12 digs, a career-high seven ace serves and five kills.
Steffen now has 266 career kills, 964 career assists (12th on school's career list), 463 career digs (19th on school's career list) and 93 career ace serves (seventh on school's career list).
Also for the Lady Trojans, Bri Powers had 12 digs and three assists; Samantha Coron had six digs, two kills and two ace serves; Megan Hollander had 10 digs, three kills and one block; Megan Vidmar had four kills and Hannah Hanson had three kills and two assists.
Powers now has 401 career digs, which ranks 23rd on school's career list.
NIACC returns to action Tuesday at Hawkeye CC in an ICCAC match.
