NIACC women upset No. 6 Iowa Western, 59-54
MASON CITY - The NIACC women's basketball team upset No. 6 Iowa Western 59-54 Wednesday night in an ICCAC contest in the NIACC gym.
Nora Francois connected on a 3-point goal with 34 seconds remaining in the contest to give NIACC a 56-54 lead. The Trojans pushed their lead to 58-54 on an Audrey Martinez-Stewart layup with 17 seconds remaining in the game.
NIACC improved to 14-8 overall and 5-8 in the ICCAC.
It was the first win over a rated team for the NIACC women since the then top-ranked Trojans topped No. 4 Kirkwood 95-73 in the 2020 NJCAA Region XI title game on March 8, 2020 in the NIACC gym.
In Wednesday's game, Francois led the Trojans with 12 points. Martinez-Stewart and Raven Kinnetz both scored 11 points.
NIACC's Alyssa Hames scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Trojans' Kourtney Manning scored six points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Iowa Western (12-7, 9-3) was led by Aleshia Jones with 10 points.
NIACC returns to action Saturday at home against Ellsworth. Game time in the NIACC gym is slated for 1 p.m.
