No. 17 NIACC women place 5th at Illinois Central tournament
EAST PEORIA, Ill. - For the third time in four seasons, the NIACC women's basketball team has topped Cincinnati State Tech and CC.
No. 17 NIACC topped Cincinnati State 75-71 in the fifth-place game Friday at the Stoney Creek/Cougar Holiday Tournament on the Illinois Central campus.
NIACC trailed 36-29 at the half and Cincinnati State led 55-52 after three quarters.
Freshman Taylor Laabs led the Lady Trojans with 19 points, including four 3-point goals. Freshman Khalilah Holloway scored 14 points with six rebounds and sophomore Courtney Larson scored 12 points with seven rebounds.
Also for NIACC, freshman Cierra Stanciel scored seven points and led the way with nine rebounds.
NIACC (7-5 overall) also topped Cincinnati State at the 2015 Illinois Central tournament and the Lady Trojans beat the Surge at the NJCAA Division II national tournament in 2014.
Cincinnati State stopped NIACC in the opening round of the 2014 Illinois Central tournament.
The NIACC women return to action Jan. 7 at Iowa Western. The Lady Trojans open ICCAC play on Jan. 14 at home against DMACC.
