No. 6 Kirkwood sweeps NIACC softball team

CEDAR RAPIDS - The NIACC softball team had enough offense on Wednesday. It just didn't have as much as No. 6 Kirkwood.
Despite Tricia Notermann hitting a pair of home runs and the Lady Trojans pounding four long balls in the opener, the Lady Trojans couldn't topple Kirkwood, losing by scores of 15-7 and 10-2.
Aside from Notermann's two homers in the opener, Brittany Florea and Lexy Pederson each went deep. Allison Scott followed suit in the nightcap.
"I loved that we came out and swung the bats," NIACC coach Christi Weiser said. "Offensively, we just attacked."
NIACC had the tying run on base in the top of the sixth in the opener, but a Becca Huberty drive was caught against the fence and the Lady Trojans were called for leaving the base early in an attempt to tag up that changed the complexion of the game. Kirkwood went on to score six times in the bottom half of the frame to end the game early.
"It was a turning point," Weiser said. "It was just one of those moments."
NIACC (11-18) plays Saturday at Iowa Central.
