NIACC knocks off No. 14 Kirkwood, 3-1
MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team improved to 4-1 in the ICCAC with a 3-1 win over No. 14 Kirkwood Wednesday night in the NIACC gym.
NIACC (17-5 overall) won 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23.
"(Wednesday) was a true team effort - plaing for each other and sticking to our game plan," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said. "We have worked so hard for this moment and we will continue to work on our process of one day at a time at a time, one ball at a time."
It was the first win in school history by the NIACC volleyball team over Kirkwood. NIACC, which is 1-28 all-time against Kirkwood, started playing the Eagles in volleyball in 1996.
NIACC sits in third place in the ICCAC behind Iowa Central and Northeast. Iowa Central improved to 5-0 in the league with a 3-0 win over Southwestern and Northeast CC (4-0 in the league) played at Hawkeye CC Wednesday.
NIACC hosts Northeast CC on Oct. 9 and plays at Iowa Central on Oct. 30.
In Wednesday's match, sophomore Kennedy Meister had 11 kills, seven ace serves and 20 digs. The seven ace serves is the most in a match since Connor Gauch recorded nine ace serves against Highland CC (Ill.) in the 2017 season.
Also for the Lady Trojans, freshman Becca Steffen had nine kills, 21 assists and seven digs, Shelby Heston had six kills 14 digs and two blocks, Bri Powers had 14 digs, Tessa Sienknecht had 3 kills, seven assists and eight digs, Megan Hollander had five kills, Alexa Loftus had four kills and nine digs and Braylee Wood had two kills and four blocks.
Brandt gave credit to the Lady Trojans' crowd in Wednesday's match.
"Thanks for the amazing fans," the coach said. "The gym was alive."
NIACC hosts the NIACC tournament on Friday and Saturday.
