MASON CITY - The NIACC baseball team took two of three games from DCTC on Wednesday at Roosevelt Field.
NIACC topped DCTC 10-8 in eight innings in the completion of a suspended game on April 2 in Rosemount, Minn.
NIACC then dropped the first game of originally scheduled doubleheader 5-3 in eight innings and won the nightcap 4-2.
In the completion of the suspended game, Ben Fitzgerald tied the contest with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Fitzgerald was 3 for 4, including two home runs, with four RBIs.
The game started on Wednesday with DCTC leading 8-7 with the Blue Knights batting in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Carson Parker then provided the game-winning RBI with a double in the Trojans' half of the eighth inning and the Trojans also added an insurance run in the eighth inning.
Michael Sturek pitched the final two innings for NIACC to claim his first career win. Sturek allowed no runs and no hits with one strikeout and three walks in his two innings of work.
In the first game Wednesday, DCTC scored two runs in the eighth inning to claim the non-conference victory.
Jake Christianson tied the game for the Trojans in the seventh inning with a two-out, two-RBi single to left field. Fox Leum drove in the Trojans' other run with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
In the second game, NIACC received two solo home runs from Leum in the first and third innings.
Austin VanDeWiele (1-0) gained the win in relief for the Trojans. VanDeWiele, who relieved starter Evan Reifert, threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball with one strikeout and no walks.
NIACC returns to action Thursday at home in a non-conference twinbill against the Central College Junior Varsity. The first game is slated to start at 3 p.m. at Roosevelt Field.
Notes: NIACC coach Travis Hergert has a career record of 252-144-1 ... Hergert is 18-4 all-time vs. DCTC ... Fitzgerald and Leum became the 43rd and 44th players in the Hergert era to hit two home runs in a game ... Leum now has 25 career home runs, which ranks fourth on the school's career list ... Leum has 16 home runs in 2019, which ranks 5th on the school's single-season career list.
