Trojans tie for second at Waldorf Fall Invitational
ALBERT LEA, Minn. - The NIACC men's golf team tied for second Sunday at the Waldorf University Fall Invitational with a round of 297.
Grand View University was the team champion with a 295. Iowa Lakes and host Waldorf University also both shot 297.
"It was another tournament finish that shows how important every swing is," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "To come up two strokes short of winning hurts.
"We've been in the heat of the battle in almost every tournament and a few strokes here or there makes the difference."
NIACC was led by sophomore Bennett Berger, who placed second in the individual medalist competition with a 68. Grand View's Calvin McNeeley was the individual medalist with a 66.
"Bennett Berger bounced back from an injury last week and really had it dialed in by shooting 4-under," Frenz said.
Also for the Trojans, freshman Ashtin Willms shot a career-best round of 75, freshman Garrett Ham shot 76, freshman Drew DeGabriele shot 78 and sophomore Tommy Birdsell shot 82.
"Garrett and Ashtin were solid again, but they left a few shots out there," Frenz said, "and Drew DeGabriele just continues to be consistent."
The NIACC B team placed sixth with a 322. Freshman Ian Roske shot 77, which tied is career-best round, Sam Van Brocklin shot 81, Brady Nygren shot 82, Brody Frayne shot 82 and Gavin Anderson shot 86.
NIACC returns to action Monday at the Waldorf University Challenge at the Rice Lake Golf Course in Lake Mills. The challenge begins at 11 a.m.
"We're looking forward to getting after it at Rice Lake on Monday," Frenz said.
