Berger leads NIACC at Upper Iowa Invite
WATERLOO - Sophomore Bennett Berger shot an 81 to lead the NIACC men's golf team on the first day Saturday at the Upper Iowa Invitational at Sunnyside Country Club.
NIACC is in 16th place with a 339 heading into Sunday's final round of the 36-hole tournament. Willam Jewell is the first day leader with a 301 and Kirkwood and Bemidji State are tied for second at 307.
"It was not a good day for the Trojans," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "The course played tough (Saturday) and the wind and cold temps were big factors.
"All of the guys got off to mediocre starts and we just couldn't get anything going. We didn't hit a lot of fairways off the tee, short game was a struggle and we missed a lot of putts. That's kind of a recipe for disaster."
Also for the Trojans Saturday, freshman Garrett Ham shot 85, freshman Ashtin Willms shot 86, freshman Drew DeGabriele shot 87 and freshman Gavin Anderson shot 91,
"The plan is to regain our focus and compete to win the day (Sunday)," Frenz said.
William Jewell's Bryson Oats is the first day individual leader with a round of 73. William Jewell's Isac Fredriksson and Kirkwood's Nathan Offerman and Reid Hall are tied for second with rounds of 74,
