
NIACC tops Minnesota West, 43-9
MASON CITY - The NIACC men's wrestling team topped Minnesota West CTC 43-9 Wednesday evening in a non-conference dual meet in the NIACC Recreation Center.
The Trojans (2-2 in duals) picked up falls from Rhett Bonnette (125), Isaac Church (141), Cory Scanlan (157) and Xander Kenworthy (285).
At 125 pounds, Bonnette pinned Jacob Hernandez in 34 seconds.
At 141, Church pinned Kaiden Lowman in 2 minutes, 59 seconds.
At 157 pounds, Cory Scanlan picked up a 4:15 falal over Ian Johnson.
At 285 pounds, Kenworthy, who normally wrestles at 197 pounds, pinned Brody Knapp in :44.
Other NIACC winners Wednesday were Emmanuel Celestin (149), Brock Moore (165), Jaylin Smith (184) and Jessey Colas (197).
Celestin and Smith won by technical fall, Moore won by decision and Colas won by forfeit.
Smith picked up a win Wednesday at his fourth different weight class in three seasons at NIACC.
In Smith's freshman campaign, he was 8-10 and placed fifth at the district tournament at 285 pounds.
Last season wrestling unattached, Smith was 4-4 at 197 pounds.
In his first seven matches in the 2023-24 season, Smith picked up three wins at 174 pounds. On Wednesday, Smith gained his first career win at 184 pounds with a 17-1 technical fall over the Blue Jays Taten Shroyer.
Wednesday's dual meet win over Minnesota West was the final competition for the Trojans in the 2023 calendar year. The Trojans return to action Jan. 6 at home in NIACC's Battle For The Helmet.
