
NIACC's Steene sets school mark in high jump
DES MOINES - NIACC's Fabian Steene made school history on Friday.
The freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden won the high jump at the Grand View Viking Classic with a school record leap of 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches. The leap of 6-7 1/2 also qualified Steene for the upcoming NJCAA national outdoor track and field meet.
Steene had shared the school's outdoor high jump mark with Eric Swart (2019) at 6-6 3/4. Steene recorded his jump of 6-6 3/4 at the Grand View Viking Relays in the season-opening outdoor meet on March 25.
It was the second straight meet that Steene claimed the high jump title. He also won the Mount Mercy DeBacker Invitational on April 21 iwth a leap of 6-4 3/4.
NIACC's Josiah Kliment was second in the 400 hurdles (56.65), Perez Hemmings was third in the 110 hurdles (15.67) and Matt Seberson was third in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 42-10 3/4, which ranks fourth on the school's career triple jump list.
Seberson's previous personal best leap in the triple jump was 42-4 3/4 at the Jim Duncan Invitational on April 14, 2023.
Also for the Trojans, Hugo Massa was fourth in the 400 (51.02). Seberson was fifth in the long jump (20-9) and Kein Valentine was ninth in the long jump (20-5).
NIACC's Jacob Vais was seventh in the 800 (2:02.70), Bryson Canton was seventh in the 1,500 (4:15.23) and Steene was seventh in the javelin (138-11).
The Trojans' Bruce Huggins was 10th in the 200 (22.71).
