NIACC stops Iowa Lakes on sophomore night
MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team topped Iowa Lakes 3-1 in its final ICCAC match of the season Wednesday night in the NIACC gym.
NIACC won 25-19, 26-28, 25-23, 25-20.
Before Wednesday's match, six NIACC sophomores were honored. The six sophomres on the NIACC squad are Kyra Marquez, Katelyn Wilson, Amanda Borden, Sammi Hyde, Brooke Greenwood and Becca Konz.
Freshmen Hannah Wagner and Shelby Heston led the Lady Trojans with 16 kills apiece. Heston's 16 kills was a career-high.
Freshman Sydney Roush contributed a career-best 51 assists. The 51 assists in a match is the most for a NIACC player since Taylor Chrencik recorded 53 assists in a match against Ellsworth in the 2012 season.
Wagner also had 12 digs and Heston had 10 digs and two ace serves.
Also for the Lady Trojans, Connor Gauch had nine digs, Borden had seven kills, 10 digs and two ace serves, Hyde had eight digs and four ace serves, Greenwood had six kills and five blocks and Konz had 13 kills and four digs.
NIACC (7-22 overall, 1-7 in the ICCAC) returns to action Thursday at home in its annual Think Pink match against the Viterbo University junior varsity. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
After Thursday's match, the Lady Trojans face Kirkwood in the opening round of the NJCAA Region XI tournament on Nov. 1 in Cedar Rapids.
