NIACC's Westover selected as ICCAC keeper of the week
MASON CITY - NIACC's freshman Jada Westover was selected as the ICCAC Division II keeper of the week for the week of Sept. 19-25.
Westover was 1-0-1 with a 4-0 shutout over Scott CC. She was also in goal for a 2-2 tie against Hawkeye CC.
Westover collected 20 saves in the two ICCAC matches for the Trojans, who are 3-5-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the ICCAC.
"Whenever I step on the field, I always give it my all," Westover said. "I'm going to play to the best of my ability.
"I always try to have good communication with my defense. That's a big part as a goalkeeper. You can see the field better as a goalkeeper than they can. I always go for the ball with no fear.
NIACC returns to action Tuesday at home against No. 6 (NJCAA Division II) Northeast CC (12-1-1, 5-0) . The match is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
Northeast CC topped NIACC 6-0 in the first meeting between the two teams on Sept. 17 in Norfolk, Neb.
Westover said her defense and the Trojans, as a whole, have improved since that first match against Northeast CC.
"We're starting to work more as a team," she said. "When someone steps out on defense, we have another person covering. Our communication is improving."
