MARSHALLTOWN - The NIACC baseball team swept an ICCAC doubleheader from Marshalltown CC on Saturday.
NIACC won the first game 11-7 and won the second game 26-1 by collecting 24 hits.
The 26 runs in the second game is the most by the Trojans since they scored 24 in a 28-24 loss to Hutchinson CC on March 14, 2018. The 24 hits by the Trojans is the most since they pounded out 22 hits in the second game of a doubleheader against Ellsworth on May 16, 2016.
It is the third time this season that NIACC has scored at least 20 runs in a game. The Trojans topped Kirkwood 20-12 in the second game of a doubleheader on March 30 and topped Kirkwood 21-17 on April 6.
In Saturday's second game, the Trojans hit four home runs and seven doubles.
NIACC's Ike Mezzenga was 3 for 4, including a home run - his 10th of the season, with four RBIs and three runs scored. Nathan Osborne, Logan Milene and Kade Peloquin also homered for the Trojans.
Zach Zaetta, Colin Evers and Peloquin all drove in three runs.
NIACC's Ben Wagner, Gunnar Hansen and Peloquin also collected three hits.
NIACC scored six runs in the first inning, eight runs in the second inning and seven runs in the fifth inning. The Trojans also scored two runs in the third and sixth innings and added one run in the seventh inning.
NIACC's Thomas Gross (5-3) tossed a complete-game 3-hitter. Gross struck out 12 and walked two in his seven-inning outing. Gross now ranks fifth on the school's career strikeout list with 125.
It was the second time this season and third time in his career that Gross accumulated double figure strikeouts in a single game.
In Saturday's first game, Jacob Mrosko (4-3) gained the win. Mrosko struck out a career-high 12, walked three and allowed seven runs (five earned) on three hits.
NIACC's Bennett McCollow hit two home runs and Milene also homered. McCollow now has 11 home runs and 36 RBIs.
NIACC (23-14 overall, 12-9 in the ICCAC) wraps up its four-game series against Marshalltown CC on Sunday.
