MASON CITY - The NIACC baseball team swept Southwestern in an ICCAC doubleheader on Saturday at Roosevelf Field.
NIACC won the first game 11-0 in five innings and completed the sweep with a 10-4 win in the second game.
In the first game, NIACC's Jacob Mrosko tossed a complete-game one hitter with nine strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter. Mrosko (3-2) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and only allowed a two-out double to Joel Sampson.
It was the second shutout for NIACC this season. The Trojans also blanked Century College 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on March 12.
NIACC (16-10 overall, 6-5 in the ICCAC) broke open the first game with seven runs in the fourth inning. The Trojans also plated a single run in the first inning and three runs in the third inning.
NIACC's Cayden Nicoletto hit a three-run home run (his third of the season) in the third inning and Ike Mezzenga hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Kade Peloquin collected a two-run double in the fourth inning.
In the second game, NIACC's Thomas Gross (4-2) gained the win allowing two runs in seven innings of work. Gross, who walked three and hit three, allowed one hit with a season-high 10 strikeouts.
Gross allowed two runs in the first inning and held the Spartans scoreless over the next six innings. Gross now has 109 career strikeouts, which ranks seventh on the school's career strikeout list.
NIACC scored four runs in the second inning, pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth frames and collected four runs in the eighth inning.
The Trojans received two-run homers from Cody Kelly and Lincoln Berry in the second inning. Noah Juliar hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and Mezzenga hit a two-run homer (his seventh of the season) in the eighth inning.
Kelly's home run was his team-leading 11th of the season.
Kelly also added a two-RBI double in the eighth inning.
NIACC plays Southwestern in a doubleheader on Sunday at Roosevelt Field. The first game, a nine-inning contest that starts at 1 p.m., is the final game of the three-game ICCAC series.
The second game Sunday, a seven-inning game, is a non-conference game.
