NIACC's Shuryan wins 3,000 at regionals

STORM LAKE - NIACC freshman Skyila Shuryan won the 3,000-meter run Saturday at the NJCAA Region 11 track and field championships.

Shuryan won the event in a personal-best time of 12 minutes, 24.26 seconds. Shuryan was third in the mile in a time 5:47.37 and seventh in the 800 (2:38.41).

The NIACC women's track and field team placed sixth at the NJCAA Region 11 Championships Saturday on the Buena Vista campus.

NIACC scored 40 points in the two-day event. Iowa Western was the team champion with 266.5 points and Iowa Central was second with 165 points.

NIACC freshman Tenisha Herbert placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 10.17 meters (33 feet, 4 1/2 inches), which ranks third on the school's indoor triple jump list. Herbert was also seventh in the 60-meter dash (7.99).

In the 60 hurdles, NIACC's Maddy Welbes was sixth (10.16) and Taja Conley was seventh (10.53).

In the 400, NIACC's Shelby Goepel was 10th (1:14.67).
