Weiner leads NIACC at district golf
DODGE CITY, Kan. - Sophomore Emma Weiner shot an opening round 95 to lead the NIACC women's golf team during the first round of the NJCAA Plains District Championships at the Mariah Hills Golf Course.
Weiner, who prepped at Newman Catholic shot nines of 47 and 48 for her first day total of a season low 95. Freshman Paige Danger was next in line for the Trojans with a 47-50 - 97.
"Emma and Paige played well (Monday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "and outside of a few mistakes that got them in some bad positions, I think they were fairly pleased with how they hung in there."
NIACC shot a 418 as a team on the first day of the two-day event.
"The team gave it their all (Monday)," Frenz said. The course is in great shape and it's just fun to compete in this type of an event with schools from all over the Midwest.
Dodge City CC is the first day leader with a 305. Iowa Western is in second with a 313 and Barton County CC is in third with a 332.
also received a 102 from freshman Cameran Moellers and a 124 from sophomore Karissa Hoon.
"Cameran couldn't get her short game and putter going," Frenz said, "and if that's not working on a championship caliber course, it makes for a long day.
"I really have to take my hat off to Karissa (Monday) as she had what every golfer fears, and if you're a golfer, you know what that is and we don't say the word. But she never gave up or quit and she'll march back out there (Tuesday) and try her hardest."
The second day of the district championships gets underway Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
"It's supposed to be a little windier (Tuesday)," Frenz said, "but hotter, so we'll see how the day goes for the Trojans. We're looking forward to competing for the final time this spring."
