Trojans place fifth at Battle of Waterloo
WATERLOO - The NIACC men's golf team placed fifth at the Battle of Waterloo Saturday at the Gates Park Golf Course.
NIACC shot a 54-hole total of 303-307-320 - 930. DMACC was the team champion with a 299-293-294 - 886.
"In the end, we didn't finish the tournament like we needed to," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "but this was a positive weekend for this team.
"We got some nice efforts out of every player at some point during the 54-hole event."
NIACC was led by sophomore Bryce Malchow with a 76-75-76 - 227, which tied for ninth in the individual medalist competition. Freshman Tim Castle shot 77-75-79 - 231, which tied for 15th and sophomore Kai Nelles shot 76-77-79 - 232, tied for 21st.
"Bryce Malchow, Kai Nelles and Tim Castle had all of their rounds in the 70s and that's what we need from our 1-2-3," Frenz said.
NIACC's Elic Fjetland shot 74-80-86 - 240 and Ryan Berkley shot rounds of 83 and 82 on Friday but was forced to withdraw due to an injury on Saturday.
"Elic Fjetland's 74 and 80 rounds on Friday were solid," Frenz said. "It just got away from him (Saturday), but he'll bounce back. Ryan Berkley has been working hard so it's really too bad he couldn't finish."
NIACC's team of Jackson Koebernick (80-78-78 - 236), Anders Palmquist (78-82-79 - 239), Mitchell Staudt (84-87-79 - 250) and Bennett Suntken (87-91-88 - 266) placed ninth with a 329-338-324 - 991.
"I was also pleased with the play of Jackson Koebernick, Mitchell Staudt and Anders Palmquist," Frenz said. "Bennett Suntken had it going early on Friday."
