Castle, Koebernick lead NIACC at district preview
PANORA - Freshman Tim Castle shot an 82 to lead the NIACC men's golf team on day one of the NJCAA North Central district preview tournament Monday at Lake Panorama National Resort.
Freshman Jackson Koebernick shot an 83 for the Trojans, who shot a 342 and sit in ninth place. Kirkwood leads the tournament with a 306 and Southeast CC is in second with a 308.
"It was a tough day for the Trojans with Kai Nelles not able to play due to illness and the weather conditions wicked," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "However, now that we've seen the course hopefully we'll play better (Tuesday).
"Obviously, the weather impacted scoring on some more than others, but I appreciated the effort (Monday). Tim Castle and Jackson Koebernick did a great job of hanging in there (Monday) and Anders Palmquist gave me a good effort."
NIACC's Bryce Malchow shot 88 and Palmquist shot 89. Also for the Trojans, Mitchell Staudt shot 90.
Day two of the tournament is set for Tuesday.
"Even though the weather conditions aren't expected to be a lot better (Tuesday), if at all," Frenz said, "I think they're all looking forward to getting a chance to attack this course again."
Team standings - Kirkwood 306, Southeast CC 308, Northeast CC 316, Hawkeye CC 317, DMACC 321, Southwestern 322, Iowa Central 323, Iowa Lakes 326, NIACC 342, Southeastern 358.
