Nelles leads NIACC on 1st day at Iowa Central Invite
FORT DODGE - Sophomore Kai Nelles shot 81 on Friday to lead the NIACC men's golf team on the first day at the Iowa Central Spring Invitational at the Fort Dodge Country Club.
NIACC is ninth place after the first 18 holes with a 337. Iowa Central is the first-day leader with a 295 and DMACC is in second with a 296.
"Just like the weather, both our teams were very unpredictable (Friday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "We played pretty well a week ago at Fort Madison, but didn't keep that momentum going (Friday).
"On the guys side, we're searching for our identity. Are we good or are we mediocre. We definitely know we are much better than we played (Friday). Even though it was windy, we honestly beat ourselves."
Also for the Trojans Friday, freshmen Tim Castle and Elic Fjetland both shot 85, sophomore Bryce Malchow shot 86 and freshman Jackson Koebernick shot 89.
NIACC freshman Ryan Berkley played as an individual on Friday and shot 83.
"it's very difficult to keep a positive vibe going when we don't have a lot of practice time," Frenz said, "but we have to get over that and compete. Our focus is not dialed in and that's on me."
The second round of the Iowa Central Spring Invitational is set for Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
Team standings - Iowa Central 295, DMACC 296, Southeast CC 303, Northeast CC 310, Waldorf University 311, Grinnell College 314, Simpson College 323, North Central Missouri 324, NIACC 337, Florida College 350.
