NIACC places third at Quad Cup
MASON CITY - The NIACC men's golf team placed at the Quad Cup exhibition Thursday at the Legacy Golf Course.
NIACC topped Iowa Lakes 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 in the third-place match. The Trojans dropped a first-round match in 2 extra holes to DMACC.
The annual Ryder Cup-style event pits NIACC, DMACC, Iowa Central and Iowa Lakes in the final event of the fall season for the four ICCAC schools. NIACC is currently playing Iowa Lakes in the third-place match.
"We played two really tough matches (Thursday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "I couldn't ask for anything more out of the guys.
"They really played well in both matches. We gave DMACC all they could handle in the first match before losing in a two-hole playoff. It was an exciting morning session and one that we were definitely ready to compete in."
DMACC won the Quad Cup with a 3-1 win over Iowa Central in the title match. Iowa Central was last year's Quad Cup winner.
In the first round match, NIACC and DMACC tied 2-2 with the Bears advancing to face Iowa Central in the finals with in two extra holes over the Trojans.
Winning first-round matches for the Trojans were the teams of Tim Castle and former Trojan Kai Nelles and Jackson Koebernick and former Trojan Jackson Hamlin.
Against Iowa Lakes, Koeberick and Hamlin and Castle and Nelles both won their matches. Elic Fjetland and Mitchell Staudt tied their match.
"The second match against Iowa Lakes was a battle to the end before we won," Frenz said. "This format is so much fun and it's a great way to end the fall season with an exhibition match that is very competitive.
"I'm very encourage by how the team competed the last 2-3 weeks of the season and I'm really looking forward to the spring season. We'll now get in the weight room and get our off-season workout program going."
