NIACC women place fourth at own tournament
MASON CITY – The NIACC women's golf team placed fourth out of four teams with a 379 at the annual NIACC fall golf invitational Thursday at the Mason City Country Club.
Waldorf College was the women's champion with a 342.
Sophomore Savannah Lentz led the Lady Trojans with a 86. Also for the Lady Trojans, Lyndie Phillips shot an 89, Carlie Eckenrod shot a 96, Alyssa Purman shot a 108 and Rebecca Long shot a 114.
"Savannah played ok today," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "She's a little disappointed that she didn't go lower, but she was having a little trouble losing her tee shot to the right and got herself in a little trouble with the thick rough.
"But I know she'll bounce back for next weekends tournament. I was really happy with how freshman Lyndie Phillips played today after being 6 over her first three holes. It's always a little nerve wracking the first time out for the freshmen but she played great on the back 9 and came up with a solid opening round of 89."
Kirkwood was the men's team champion with a 288 and Iowa Central was second with a 296.
The NIACC men were led by sophomore Sam Steinwand, who was fifth with a 72. Sophomore Chris Staudt was next in line for the Trojans with a 79.
"Sam Steinwand showed some terrific sophomore leadership to finish two shots off the lead," Frenz said. "Sam has continued to work on his game and really came into the season with a focus to get to next level. This was a great way to start.
"Chris Staudt has been very solid in qualifying and hung in there nicely today. It's early and we're still trying to figure out who's in the top 5 and the guys are so competitive right now for those positions it's going to be interesting to see who steps and take control. A 313 isn't terrible opening day score, but obviously the bar is being set lower each year in our league and we know what we have to get to."
