NIACC's Day, Snavely qualify for nationals
GRINNELL - NIACC's Jacob Day and Sarah Snavely earned trips to the NJCAA national indoor track and field meet Saturday with their performances at the Grinnell Invitational.
Day, a sophomore from Charles City, placed third in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15 minutes, 37.15 seconds. The national qualifying standard in the 5,000 is 16:05.80.
It was the first time this season Day has run the 5,000.
Snavely, a sophomore from Danville, was fourth in the shot put with a career-best toss of 11.84 meters to qualify nationals. The national qualifying standard in the shot put is 11.64 meters.
Snavely's previous career best throw in the shot put was 11.38 meters on Jan. 23 at the Chelsey M. Henkenius Open on the Wartburg College campus in Waverly.
Also in the men's meet Saturday for the Trojans, Ruben Dorsey was fourth in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 13.28 meters, Keisuke Ohtani was sixth in the 600 with a season-best 1:29.24, Rayvon Gray was seventh in the 60 (7.33 seconds) and Devon Webster was eighth in the long jump (6.07 meters).
In the women's meet for the Lady Trojans, Sola Stephenson won the 600 with a season-best 1:44.05, Taylor Glawe was fourth in the high jump (1.48 meters), Kendra Schmidt was sixth in the 600 (1:53.90) and Snavely was eighth in the weight throw with a career-best toss of 13.95 meters.
NIACC returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the South Dakota State Invitational.
