NIACC puts three in quarterfinals

COUNCIL BLUFFS - NIACC advanced three wrestlers to the quarterfinals Friday at the NJCAA Division I national wrestling tournament.

NIACC's Brock Luthens (133) and Hunter Luke (141) and Zach Santee (285) all won a pair of matches Friday morning to advance to Friday night's quarterfinals. After the morning and afternoon sessions, the Trojans are in 17th place with 15 points.

At 133 pounds, Luthens (11-7) stopped fourth-ranked Gage Gomez of Barton CC 8-6 in his first round match. Luthens topped Nassau's Anthony Sobotker 7-5 in his second-rounmd match.

At 141 pounds, Luke (15-6) blanked Northeast Oklahoma A&M's Corbin Nirschl 6-0 in his opening match. Luke stayed alive on the championship side of the bracket with a 4-3 win over Niagara's Freddy Eckles.

At 285 pounds, NIACC's Zach Santee (12-11) upset Western Wyoming's fifth-ranked Landon Brown 3-2 in his first round match. Santee pinned Triton's Christopher Colvin in four minutes, 39 seconds in his second-round match.

NIACC's Tony Mendoza (149) and Reldon Miller (184), who both dropped their first-round match, both won a pair of consolation matches to stay alive on the back side of the bracket.

NIACC's Mark Gonzales (125) and Mason Carpenter (174) were eliminated from the tournament with consolation losses Friday afternoon.
