NIACC women open with 7-2 win
ROSEMOUNT, Minn. - In December of 2016, the NIACC women's soccer players signed its first two players as Mason City's Rylie Smith and Bondurant's Jessica Altman inked national letter of intents.
So it was fitting that Smith and Altman scored the Lady Trojans' first two goals in a 7-2 win over DCTC as the program played its first match since the fall of 2004.
Smith connected on the history-making first goal with 38 minutes, 5 seconds remaining in the first half on an assist from Emma Eden and Altman added the second goal at the 27:36 mark as the Lady Trojans cruised to the nonconfernce victory at the Ames Soccer Complex.
NIACC led 3-2 at the half and added four second-half goals as the Lady Trojans gave Leo Driscoll his first win as a head coach.
Lena Oliver scored the Lady Trojans' final goal of the first half on an assist from Olga Oliver with 8:00 left before intermission.
In the second half, NIACC received goals from Lena Oliver, Olga Oliver, Rachel Kontze and Jasmin Benedict.
NIACC's Kathryn Flaherty earned the win in goal. She allowed two first-half goals but kept the Blue Knights scoreless in the final 45 minutes.
The seven goals is tied for the second most in program history. In the 2002 season, NIACC topped Scott CC 8-2. The Lady Trojans also topped Scott CC 7-1 in the 2003 season.
NIACC returns to action Sunday at Lake Superior College in Duluth, Minn. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
