NIACC's Lunning earns runner-up medalist honors
MASON CITY - NIACC freshman Thea Lunning shot an 80 to earn runner-up medalist honors at the NIACC Fall Invitational on Thursday at the Mason City Country Club.
Lunning, who opened her collegiate career with a 90 last week at the Iowa Lakes Invitational, shot rounds of 38 and 42 on her home course. Iowa Lakes' Abby Stender claimed medalist honors with a 37-42 - 79.
"Thea was really outstanding (Thursday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "She's so close to breaking into the 70s and once that happens that wall will be knocked down.
"I'm very excited for her."
NIACC, which shot a 401 at the Iowa Lakes Invite, placed third with a 356 on Thursday. DMACC won the team title with a 341 and Iowa Lakes was second with a 348.
"I didn't think we were going to get this one played because of the weather, but I'm sure glad we did," Frenz said. "We came up a little short on the scoreboard, but I saw a lot of really good things."
Also for the Lady Trojans on Thursday, sophomore Jordyn Barragy shot a 39-48 - 87, Ashley Voves shot a 46-48 - 94 and Abby Murray shot a 49-46 - 95.
"Jordyn played great on the front nine with a 39 and things got a little sideways on the back," Frenz said. "Ashley and Abby put together nice rounds as well bouncing back from disappointing rounds at Okoboji last week.
"We put together a good team score that is only going to get better."
The NIACC women return to action on Sept. 25 at the Simpson College Fall Invitational.
