NIACC bows out of regional tournament
CEDAR RAPIDS - The NIACC softball team dropped a 5-0 decision to second-seed Kirkwood Saturday in the opening round of the NJCAA Region XI-B tournament on the Kirkwood campus.
The Lady Trojans also dropped a 8-7 decision in 10 innings to Ellsworth in an elimination game.
In Lady Trojans' first game, Kirkwood scored one run in the third inning, plated three runs in the fifth inning and pushed across a single run in the sixth inning.
Against Ellsworth, NIACC's Hailey Worman hit a solo home run in the first inning.
Ellsworth tied the game with a single run in the second inning to tie the contest at 1-1. NIACC regained the lead (2-1) with a single run in the third inning.
Ellsworth plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Panthers pushed their lead to 7-2 with two runs in the fifth inning.
NIACC tied the contest with five runs in the sixth inning - four runs came on a grand slam from Laken Lienhard.
Ellsworth won the game with a single run in the bottom of the 10th inning.
