
NIACC men place second at regional meet
MASON CITY - The NIACC men's cross country team placed second at the NJCAA Region XI meet Saturday on the NIACC campus with 52 points.
Iowa Central won the meet with 19 points and Iowa Western was third with 76 points.
NIACC was led by sophomore Wal Khat, who placed second in 25 minutes, 3 seconds on the 8-kilometer course.
Iowa Central's Karim Achengli was the men's individual champion in a time of 24:47.
Earning second-team all-region honors for the Trojans was Zach Freund, who was 11th in 26:40.
Earning honorable mention all-region honors for the Trojans were Jose Aguilera (15th in 27:05), Blake Keller (16th in 27:08), Colby Kraninger (19th in 27:39), John Kraft (20th in 27:41, tying his personal best), Samuel Dean (23rd in a personal best 27:47) and Nick Frenz (25th in a personal best 27:55).
Also for the Trojans, Canyon Kuhlmann was 33rd in a personal best 28:17, David Carter was 37th in a personal best 28:36, Aaron Hardcastle was 56th in a personal best 30:30 and Abdiaziz Wako was 57th 30:44.
The NIACC women's cross country team placed third at regionals with 95 points
Iowa Central won the meet with 17 points and Iowa Western was second with 64 points.
Sophomore Kendra Schmidt, who earned second-team all-region honors, was 13th in 20:18 on the 5K course.
NIACC's Amy Fullerton, who was 23rd in 21:18, and Keisha Gonzague, who was 24th in a personal best 21:22, both earned honorable mention all-region honors.
Also for the Lady Trojans, Guadalupe Diaz was 28th in a personal best 21:43 and Cassy Bonsall was 32nd in 22:09.
