Wickman leads NIACC at home invite
MASON CITY - JJ Wickman shot 41-34 - 75 to lead the NIACC men's golf team at Friday's NIACC Fall Invitational on Friday at the Mason City Country Club.
DMACC's Tyler Sansgaard and Dylan Sporrer tied for the individual medalist honors with 68.
"JJ Wickman showed me something (Friday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "He shot 41 on the front, but instead of packing it in, he went 2-under on the back.
"That's the mental strength we need to show - top to bottom."
NIACC placed fourth in the team standings with a 316. DMACC was the team champion with a 283.
Iowa Central was second with a 293.
"A lot of disappointment on the faces of our men's team," Frenz said. "Whenever you play on your home course, you really want to play well.
"Mentally, I think they got down on themselves pretty quick (Friday) and you just can't have that when you're competing."
NIACC's John Doherty shot 38-41 - 79, Beau Thompson shot 43-38 - 81, Kai Nelles shot 42-39 - 81 and Jack Barragy shot 40-42 - 82.
Also for the Trojans, Jason Hesner shot 41-44 - 85 and Hunter Heintz shot 38-50 - 88.
NIACC returns to action Tuesday at the Iowa Lakes Invitational at Brooks National Golf Course in Okoboji.
"Again, they aren't happy with themselves, but we need to put this behind us and get ready for Tuesday," Frenz said.
Team standings - DMACC 283, Iowa Central 293, Hawkeye CC 305, NIACC 316, Iowa Lakes 319, Hawkeye CC B 355.
