CEDAR RAPIDS - The No. 3 Kirkwood softball team swept a doubleheader from NIACC on Thursday.
Kirkwood (25-3 overall, 2-0 in the ICCAC) won the first game 10-2 in five innings and took the second game 15-0 also in five innings.
In the first game, Kirkwood's Donirae Mayhew (12-0) tossed a four-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks. NIACC scored two runs off Mayhew in the first inning.
NIACC's Shelby Low drove in a run with a double. Morgan Thesing-Ritter, Kaci Sherwood and Kaitlyn Carlson had the other three NIACC hits.
Kirkwood scored six runs in the first inning and plated two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth frame.
In the second game, Kirkwood's Natalie Halvorson (11-3) tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts. Low and Katie Chapman collected the two NIACC hits.
Kirkwood scored nine runs in the first inning. The Eagles also scored three runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth frame.
NIACC (11-17, 2-4) returns to action Saturday with a league twinbill against Iowa Central in Austin, Minn. The first game is slated to start at 6 p.m.
