Nelles leads Trojans with 74
DIKE - Kai Nelles shot a 74 to lead the NIACC men's golf team Friday at the Hawkeye CC Fall Invitational at the Fox Ridge Golf Course.
NIACC placed fifth in the team standings with a 314. Iowa Central was the team champion with a 289 and DMACC was second with a 303.
"Kai Nelles played like a No. 1 guy (Friday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "He was 2-under at one point in the round and got in trouble on the par 3 13th and took a quad.
"But then he followed that up with great birdie. That showed me that he's beginning to learn that one hole or swing doesn't destroy the round."
Also for the Trojans, Andrew Crane shot a 78, Jacob Wiersma shot a 80, Jack Barragy shot a 82, Bryce Malchow shot a 87. Eric Ritter shot a 78, Bradley Vaith shot a 79 and Hunter Heintz shot a 88.
"I liked what I saw out of the guys (Friday)," Frenz said. "We've been battling a lot of mental mistakes, but our attitudes were much better (Friday) and it showed.
"Andrew Crane has been very solid the last three tournaments. We haven't hit on all cylinders at the same time yet, but when we do we'll be right there."
