NIACC tops Marshalltown CC, 3-1
MARSHALLTOWN - The NIACC volleyball team topped Marshalltown CC 3-1 Wednesday to wrap up the regular season.
NIACC won the ICCAC match 18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 26-24. The Trojans topped Marshalltown CC 3-2 in a non-league match in Mason City earlier this month.
"We started slow and were making some unforced errors but took a positive turn at the start of the second set," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said. "Our offense started making better choices and our block came alive to push us through."
With the win, the Trojans claimed the No. 8 seed for the NJCAA Region 11 Division II tournament. The Trojans (14-23 overall, 3-8 in the ICCAC) face top-seed DMACC at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1 in Boone in the opening round of the regional tournament.
DMACC earned the top seed for the regional tournament in a tie-breaker over Kirkwood and Iowa Central. DMACC, Kirkwood and Iowa Central all finished 9-1 in conference play.
In the Trojans' victory on Wednesday, Jaida Hansen had 12 kills and four blocks. Zhane Singer had 10 kills, four digs and four blocks and Alyssa Wickersheim had eight kills and 23 digs.
NIACC's Kennedy Schwiesow had 21 digs, Abbie Hyde had 10 digs and five ace serves and Kelly Miller had eight kills.
The Trojans Ellie Hanna had five blocks and two kills, Emily Opstvedt had 21 assists and six digs, Iwalani Beltran had 23 assists, three ace serves and two digs and Kit Byars had seven kills, 10 digs and six blocks.
