NIACC women win Battle of Waterloo
WATERLOO - The NIACC women's golf team brought home some hardware on Saturday.
NIACC claimed the 2023 Battle of Waterloo with a 36-total of 353-366 - 719. Simpson College placed second with a 347-378 - 725.
The first 18 holes Friday were played at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course and Saturday's round was played at the Gates Park Golf Course.
"It was great to get a team win this weekend," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "They've been working very hard during the off-season and now during this short spring season.
"It truly was a team effort, too. We were down six after the first day and I'm pretty sure we were behind about midway through the final round, but all of them buckled down, got refocused and worked hard to come away with the best scores they could get and in the end it proved to be enough to win by six."
Sophomore Alyssa Alert led the Trojans with a 88-88 -76, which earned her fifth place in the individual medalist competition. Sophomore Sophie Lunning shot 87-93 - 180, sophomore Kirsten Boerjan shot 88-93 - 181, freshman Emma Weiner shot 90-92 - 182 and freshman Karissa Hoon shot 101-98 - 199.
"We're excited, but know we need to play much more consistent for our home tournament on Monday," Frenz said, "and the regional tournament the following week."
NIACC hosts its own women's invitational on Monday at Highland Park Golf Course starting at 10:30 a.m.
Team standings - 353-366 - 719, Simpson College 347-378 - 725. Hawkeye CC, Graceland University, Cottey College did not have enough players for a team score.
