CENTERVILLE - The NIACC baseball team split an ICCAC doubleheader on Wednesday.
NIACC topped Indian Hills 8-7 in the first game and dropped a 17-2 decision in the second game.
In the first game, the Trojans broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-4 lead. Indian Hills scored three runs in its half of the seventh inning to make it a one-run contest but could not get any closer.
Cole Newell (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Trojans. He allowed three runs on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 1 2/3 innings of work.
NIACC starter John Lyman allowed two runs on one hit with six strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work. Three NIACC pitchers combined to strike out 10 Indian Hills hitters and it was the eighth time this season that NIACC pitchers have struck out at least 10 hitters in a game.
NIACC's Alex Matchey was 2 for 3, including a double, with three RBIs. Eli Anderson and Sam Kwapnioski both drove in a run for the Trojans.
NIACC's Eli Anderson was 1 for 3 iwth one run scored and one RBI. Anderson moved his career hit total to 96 as he's looking to become the 28th member of NIACC's 100-hit club.
In the second game, Indian Hills scored 10 runs in the first inning. The Warriors also added two runs in the second inning, one run in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth frame.
NIACC's Charlie Harms hit a solo home run in the first inning and Will Couchman hit a sole homer in the fourth frame. It was the third time this season that the Trojans hit two home runs in a single game.
NIACC (10-17 overall, 2-5 in the ICCAC) returns to action Friday and Saturday in a 3-game series at DMACC in Boone.
