NIACC women sit in 3rd at BVU Invite
STORM LAKE - The NIACC women's golf team sits in third place after the first day at the Buena Vista Fall Invitational on Saturday with a 370 at the Buena Vista University Golf Course.
Host Buena Vista is the first-day leader with a 361 and Waldorf University is in second place with a 363.
NIACC's Kirsten Boerjan shot an 84 and sits in a tie for second in the individual medalist competition with Nebraska Wesleyan's Madison Jackson. York College's Riley Stuhr is the leader with a first round of 78.
"Kirsten has been solid the entire season," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "and being tied for second, just six back, is in a position to win this with a good day (Sunday) and Alyssa Alert is right there, too (tied for fifth)."
Alert shot an opening round of 87, Sophie Lunning shot a 93 and Karissa Hoon shot a 106.
"The women started out great on the front with Sophie Lunning leading the way with a 40, Frenz said. "Alyssa Alert shot a 41, Kirsten Boerjan a 43 and Karissa Hoon with a 52.
"The back nine kind of got to Sophie and Karissa but I'm encouraged with most of what I saw (Saturday)."
NIACC was playing without freshman Emma Weiner, who had a previous commitment.
The final round of the tournament is set for Sunday.
"We aren't out of this," Frenz said, "and we'll give it all we have (Sunday)," Frenz said.
Team standings - Buena Vista 361, Waldorf University 363, NIACC 370, Nebraska Wesleyan 371, Simpson College 376.
