NIACC's Martinez-Stewart inks with UMSL
ST. LOUIS - NIACC's Audrey Martinez-Stewart has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, a NCAA Division II school, for the 2023-24 season.
Martinez-Stewart, a 5-foot-5 inch point guard from St. Paul, Minn., was a first-team all-ICCAC Division II selection and was the league's defensive player of the year in the 2022-23 season.
"We are thrilled to add Audrey to our squad," said UMSL coach Katie Vaughn, who is 170-127 in 11 seasons at the school. "Her true point guard mentality and attention to detail on the defensive end is exactly what we need.
"With a young returning team, her experience will be very valuable. Audrey is a highly motivated student-athlete that is going to thrive at UMSL."
Martinez-Stewart led the ICCAC with 104 steals in the 2022-23 season. The 104 steals is tied for 11th on NIACC's all-time single-season steals list.
Martinez-Stewart, who averaged 10.4 points per game, also led the ICCAC with 158 assists. The 158 assists ranks sixth on the school's all-time single-season assist list.
Martinez-Stewart, who was a third-team all-region selection as a freshman, finished her two-year NIACC career with 271 assists (3rd on school's career list) and 189 steals (3rd on school's career list).
UMSL was 9-17 overall and 7-13 in the 2022-23 season in the 13-team Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Tritons had two seniors on last year's roster.
Former NIACC player Sydney Wetlaufer, who is from St. Joseph, Mo., was a junior on the Tritons' roster last season. Wetlaufer played at NIACC in the 2019-20 season.
