NIACC splits pair with Northeast CC

MASON CITY - For the second straight day, the NIACC baseball team walked off Northeast CC in an ICCAC contest on Monday at Roosevelt Field.
In the second game of Monday's twinbill, Adam Berghult hit a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Trojans a 10-6 victory.
NIACC, which dropped Monday's opener 11-0 in five innings, won the series against Northeast CC. The Trojans won Sunday's contest 6-5 in walk-off fashion when Alex Berreth scored when Eli Anderson reached on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the second game Monday, Luke Nordean led off the Trojans' 10th inning with a walk. Brayden Hellum and Bennett McCollow reached on one-out back-to-back singles to load the bases for Berghult, who hit his walk-off home run to center field that gave the Trojans the four-run victory.
it was Berghult's ninth home run of the season.
NIACC hit three solo home runs earlier in the contest as the Trojans took a 5-3 lead after five innings. McCollow hit a solo home run in the third inning, Kade Peloquin hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and Hellum hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.
NIACC (16-24 overall, 12-11 in the ICCAC) led 6-4 after seven innings and Northeast CC tied the contest with two runs in its hall of the eighth inning.
NIACC's Jacob Crissinger (4-1) pitched a scoreless 10th inning setting the Hawks down in order setting up the Trojans' second walk-off victory in as many days. Crissinger also gained the win in Sunday's walk-off victory.
It was the second extra inning contest of the season for the Trojans, who also dropped a 6-5 12-inning decision to Allen County CC on March 20.
In the first game Monday, Northeast CC's Christian Carew tossed a complete game one-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work. McCollow collected the lone Trojan hit with a one-out single in the first inning.
Northeast CC (31-14, 15-8) plated three runs in the first inning, five runs in the second inning and three runs in the fourth inning.
NIACC returns to action Wednesday in an ICCAC twinbill at Kirkwood. The first game in Cedar Rapids is slated for 1 p.m.
