NIACC edges Northeast CC, 6-5
MASON CITY - The NIACC baseball team edged Northeast CC 6-5 on Sunday in the first game of a three-game series at Roosevelt Field.
With the scored tied 5-5 and nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Eli Anderson reached on an error that scored Alex Berreth from third to give the Trojans the walk-off win.
Bennett McCollow, who singled leading off the inning, scored on an error earlier in the inning to tie the game at 5-5.
Northeast CC (30-13 overall, 14-7 in the ICCAC) took a 5-4 lead by scoring three runs in the top of the ninth inning. The Hawks collected two hits in the frame and also took advantage of a walk and a hit by pitch.
NIACC starter Ben Rosin did not allow a hit in 7 1/3 innings of work. Rosin allowed one run, struck out nine with one walk and one hit batter before giving way to John Lyman with one out in the eighth inning.
The nine strikeouts for Rosin was a career high. Rosin's previous single-game best for strikeouts in a game was seven, three times.
Northeast CC plated two runs in the eighth inning to trim a 4-0 NIACC lead to 4-2.
NIACC (15-23, 11-10) hit three solo home runs and scored a run on an error to take its 4-0 lead. Kade Peloquin and Will Couchman hit back-to-back home run in the fourth inning and Adam Berghult hit a home run in the seventh inning.
It was Berghult's eight home run of the season, Peloquin's seventh and Couchman's fifth.
The two teams wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader on Monday at Roosevelt Field. The first game is slated to start at noon.
